When Rose and Clayton chose Castle Leslie Estate for their wedding, they weren’t just picking a beautiful backdrop. They were writing themselves into a story that’s been unfolding in the Monaghan countryside for over 350 years.
A Castle With Character
Castle Leslie isn’t your typical fairytale venue. Tucked away on 1,000 acres of Irish countryside, dotted with ancient woodlands and glassy lakes, it’s one of the last great Irish estates still held by its founding family. The Leslies have called this place home since the 1660s, and over the centuries the castle has opened its doors to poets, politicians, ambassadors — and, in 2002, to Paul McCartney and Heather Mills, whose wedding here put Castle Leslie firmly on the map. But long before the headlines, the castle had its own quiet legends. Inside, the rooms are dressed in Italian Renaissance detail, heirlooms and antiques tucked into every corner — reportedly including a story about a table ornament designed specifically to hide a husband from his wife’s sight at dinner. It’s that kind of place: grand, a little eccentric, endlessly charming.
There are no TVs, no radios — just candlelit dinners in the original dining room, pre-dinner drinks by the fire or out in the Fountain Garden, and lazy breakfasts served until eleven. It’s a house built for slowing down, for lingering, for exactly the kind of relaxed, joy-filled celebration Rose and Clayton were after.
Flying In For Forever
Rose and Clayton made the trip from America — trading one continent for another so they could marry somewhere that felt like a storybook come to life. There’s a particular kind of magic in a destination wedding: the guests who cross an ocean just to be there, the jet lag forgotten the moment the castle comes into view, the sense that everyone gathered has chosen, quite deliberately, to be part of this one specific moment.And of course, Guinness came too — because what’s an Irish wedding without a nod to the national drink, four-legged or otherwise.

The pre-wedding dinner set the tone for everything that followed — relaxed, warm, full of laughter that spilled out over long tables. I had the joy of photographing the evening: candlelight catching on glasses raised in early toasts, the kind of unguarded laughter that only happens the night before something big.
Morning After: Breakfast in the Castle
The next morning, once the vows were said and the celebration had run its course, came my favorite kind of photography — the quiet, unposed moments. Breakfast at Castle Leslie the morning after a wedding has its own particular magic: newlyweds still glowing, family lingering over tea, the whole estate slower and softer in the early light. It’s a chance to capture the story after the story — the exhale after the “I do.”
Why This Wedding Stays With Me
Some weddings are about spectacle. This one was about warmth — a couple who flew across the world to get married somewhere steeped in history, surrounded by people who mattered, with their dog by their side and joy in every corner of the frame. Castle Leslie gave them the backdrop; Rose and Clayton gave the whole weekend its heart.
